The Numbers Everybody Should See
14.9% Average Weight Loss
Adults without diabetes taking semaglutide 2.4 mg lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks. That’s an average — not a guarantee of what will happen to you.
ABOUT ⅔
Regained After Stopping
Participants who stopped semaglutide regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost within one year.
20.2% vs. 13.7%
Two Drugs. Different Results.
Adults with obesity without diabetes lost an average of 20.2% with tirzepatide versus 13.7% with semaglutide at 72 weeks using maximum tolerated doses.
The weight loss is real. So are the questions about what happens during treatment, what happens to your body, and what happens when treatment stops.

GLP-1 Facts: Weight Loss, Weight Regain, Side Effects, Muscle Loss & What Happens When You Stop
Millions of people are asking questions about GLP-1 medications for weight loss, including semaglutide and tirzepatide. How much weight can you really lose? What happens when you stop taking a GLP-1? Does the weight come back? Can you lose muscle along with fat? What side effects should you know about before starting? Those are some of the questions explored in GLP-1: Should You Do It? by Dori Madison Smith with Amina Hilton.
What happens when you stop taking a GLP-1? In the STEP 1 trial extension, people who had received semaglutide regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost within one year after treatment was stopped. That does not mean every person will regain the same amount, but it is one reason the long-term plan matters before starting. PubMed
Can GLP-1 weight loss include muscle or lean mass? Yes. Weight loss is not automatically 100% body fat. In a SURMOUNT-1 body-composition substudy, people taking tirzepatide lost both fat mass and lean mass; about 75% of the weight lost was fat mass and about 25% was lean mass in that substudy. That is why nutrition, protein intake, strength training and preserving physical function deserve to be part of the GLP-1 conversation. PubMed
What side effects can happen with GLP-1 treatment? Gastrointestinal problems are among the most common. In current FDA prescribing information for Wegovy, commonly reported reactions in adult weight-loss trials included nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain. The exact risks and warnings depend on the medication and the individual taking it. FDA Access Data
The weight loss can be real. The health benefits can be real. The side effects, questions about lean mass, cost, long-term treatment and weight regain after stopping are real too. The point is not to scare you away from GLP-1 treatment or sell you on it. The point is to make sure you know what questions to ask before the decision becomes your reality.
